This guide covers two routes: bus (Baku → Sheki) and sleeper train (Sheki → Baku). Information on Sheki was hard to find before my trip, so I hope this helps.
The bus for Sheki departs from Baku International Bus Terminal. The nearest metro station is Avtovagzal — the name literally means "bus terminal" in Azerbaijani. The terminal is right outside the station.

Exit through Gate 7 at Avtovagzal station. The terminal entrance is directly in front of you. Inside, go upstairs — the ticket counters are on the upper floor. Ask for the Sheki bus and you will be directed to the right counter (there are several windows).

Travel time is about 4 hours. There is a 30-minute rest stop along the way with a small shop selling snacks and kebab sandwiches — good for lunch. The scenery changes gradually from modern Baku to green countryside.
⚠️ Watch out: stray dogs gather at the rest stop. Keep your food close.

Tickets must be booked online in advance. Access from some countries may be blocked. If you cannot book online, ask a local contact or a travel agency for help.
Sheki station is about 30 minutes by car from the city center — farther than expected. For late-night departures, finding a taxi can be difficult.
Recommended: Book a higher-tier vehicle and leave early. For a 0:40 AM departure, leaving the city center by 10:00 PM is a safe plan.
Sheki station is small and unstaffed — no ticket gates.

There is a warm waiting room inside. Show your ticket to anyone at the station and they will direct you to the right platform.

When the train arrives, a staff member will scan your QR code at the door.

There is a basic toilet outside the station — ask someone to point you to it, or use one before you arrive.

Travel time is about 6–7 hours. Bedding, a drink, and a light snack are provided. The train is clean and comfortable.
If traveling from Baku to Sheki by sleeper train, board at Baku Central Station, a short walk from the 28 May metro station. Returning from Sheki, you arrive at the same station.

Both options are good. Going by bus and returning by sleeper train is a great combination — you get the daytime scenery on the way there, and wake up in Baku without losing a day.
Either way, the journey itself is part of the experience.
